We flour and dust a gingerbread house every year. This year, we decided to take advantage of a December birthday, a new Jan Brett book and a sale at Target to give us extra spice this birthday weekend.
We had so much pink earlier in the month, we added a few items to the mix and baked it a marvelous, gingery, golden brown. Here's our birthday girl with more birthday gifts.
I want to take this warm kitchen moment to introduce you to another fresh-out-of-the oven picture book. My fellow Cajun writer and extraordinary storyteller, Dianne de Las Casas, has announced the arrival of her new picture book The Cajun Cornbread Boy. If you can't possibly imagine yet another twist to this oft-told children's tale, I invite you to read this book. You won't be disappointed. This is one of those stories that you think can't get any better but, with Dianne's Cajun humor and magic, it does. It does. You'll sit there, sigh contentedly, and wonder at the whimsical creativity of this writer/storyteller who tells a tale as magical as anything Jan Brett has written.
Yet, even as I write this, I am anxious to get my own copy for my girls. But my review is not without audience applause. I've heard the story told by Ms. Dianne-the-Louisiana-Storyteller and it is charming and spicy and soooooo good! I'm holding out for the opportunity to get Dianne to autograph it in person for us. If you're anixous to read it yet have been hit hard by the economy...or the holidays alone...do not worry. Ask your library to order a copy.
Simply give them this information and they will be more than happy to oblige:

We love Jan Brett in our house, although I have to say I have yet to make a gingerbread house. I did one time and it was just awful. And I HAVE to get a copy of the Cajun Cornbread Boy. My husband is from Louisana, and is very cajun, as his great-great grandfather is Tony Chachere (a name I'm sure you're familiar with). He would just LOVE that book! I bet it's wonderful. I love the cover picture! LOL!
