"We voted for the new president, Mommy," my first-grader shared with me on the way home from co-op today.
"Oh, really?" I turned my full attention to her, eager to hear her first-grade rendition about elections and about her first-voting experience.
I remember my first voting experience well. I believe Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny were running for town sheriff.
My main concern at the time was which booth to use...the 1-10 year old booth or the 11 & up booth. I was turning eleven the next day and wasn't sure if one day made a difference. LOL
"Who won?" I asked my daughter, wondering if she would even remember the names McCain/Palin vs. Obama/Biden.
I needn't have worried.
"Why, Mommy, the Elephant won, of course!"
This time around my main concern is...IF the donkey wins...how I'm going to explain that to a 6-year-old who truly believes that (because of her vote) the Elephant has won.
That is so precious. I will never forget the first time I voted. It was Reagan vs Carter and we voted inside a big refrigerator box. In my classroom, Carter won, but Reagan won the election that year. It has stuck in my mind as one of those great memories.
Blessings
