Prayer During Hurricane Season

  • Prayer for Hurricane Season
O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed your order and returned to its former quietude; you are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control. The Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season, we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a storm-less eternity awaits us. Amen. Originally dedicated to the victims of Hurricane Audrey in 1957. - Fr. Al Volpe, Cameron Parish, LA

Prayer to End Abortion

  • Prayer to End Abortion
Lord God, I thank you today for the gift of my life, And for the lives of all my brothers and sisters. I know there is nothing that destroys more life than abortion, Yet I rejoice that you have conquered death by the Resurrection of Your Son. I am ready to do my part in ending abortion. Today I commit myself Never to be silent, Never to be passive, Never to be forgetful of the unborn. I commit myself to be active in the pro-life movement, And never to stop defending life Until all my brothers and sisters are protected, And our nation once again becomes A nation with liberty and justice Not just for some, but for all, Through Christ our Lord. Amen!

Well written, Cay, and I could not agree with you more. I firmly believe that reading and copywork are important keys in writing with a bit of grammar here and there. I have almost all the resources that you have named with the exception of The Writer's Jungle. I will have to check that one out. Thanks so much.

Thanks, Cay! Again your post (and email) made me reflect on what we've done that has brough joy and smiles and it's reading, reading, reading! I can see in my daughter's writing her use of vocabulary sometimes that surprises me. The only thing I can attribute it to is the books we've read. We've done no formal vocabulary lessons. Thanks for another insightful post! I need to print this one and keep it handy!

My favorite grammar is Grammar Island, by M.C. Thompson. It is concise and a pleasure to read. Very little drill, but it is so concise and makes talking about grammar--fun--oddly enough.

All you need is the teacher edition and can read it with the student(s). I can see it easily working with a young child (my seven year-old enjoys it) through sixths as an easy reference.

I look forward to the other Michael Clay Thompson books as well.

A couple of questions:
When do you think you should start to expect proper grammar?

With copy work do you choose something different each day, or stick with a particular source?

Loved this post Cay. I too am planning to use FLL1+2 next year with my first grader and FLL3 with my 3rd grader. I am excited also that the WTM folks will also be releasing a new writing curriculum this spring. Will be anxious to check that out! Not because I need it, mind you, but because I have a sickness.
