Tonight while relaxing on the sofa strewn with newspapers, many picture books, a geoboard accompanied by many rubberbands, and the new Children's Book-of-the-Month Club Selection mailout I begged, cried, and pleaded asked my 6-yr-old to scratch a spot on my back that was itching like crazy.
6-yr-old: "Why?"
Mom: "Because Mommy can't reach it. Pretty please..."
6-yr-old: "Well...wait a sec..."
And she scampered to the other side of our sectional to rub the lap dog's belly.
Mom: "Hey! I'm the lady who cooks for you and rubs your back to help you fall asleep and buys you ice cream and takes care of you. Why does the dog get a belly rub first?"
6-yr-old: "Cause Frenchie gives us good licks."
And I couldn't help but see that no matter what we do for them, our children will love most the one who is simply a quiet presence in the house. Children will love the one who loves them unconditionally, who does not talk back, interrupt, or fuss at them...and who gives heartfelt "licks".
There is a reason we term such creatures "lucky dogs"!
I have a geoboard but its never been used! :(
