All my children but one have plain brown eyes.
My oldest son had violet blue eyes when he was born, until the age of two. I was smitten with him. We rejoiced that he had inherited PawPaw's baby blues. After those two years they got a touch of gray in them. Then a touch of gold. Then a touch of green. Seems he inherited great-Granny Sonnier's hazel eyes instead. They're his best feature and he lords over the proud fact that he's the only Arian-being in an otherwise brown-eyed family.
But everyday I have the honor and privilege of having these four pairs of Cajun brown eyes smiling at me.
And only I see the difference.
One's eyes are the color of mine. Coffee bean...deep, dark, and serious...richly brewed like Granny use to boil on the stove with dark grounds floating to the top. They are almost like those little tar bubbles you found as a child on a hot July road, the ones you used to pop with your bike tire. Definitely like the seeded-center of a black-eyed Susan.
Another one's eyes are cinnamony light, like her Daddy's. They're so light it doesn't seem fair that they're brown. They tend to have a squirt of lemony-yellow swirling in the recesses of them when she's happy. It's like a slice of lemon spinning in a cup of stirred tea.
My second son's eyes are even lighter brown. Pools of light tree sap yet to be boiled into molasses. They are more like his Opa's. Ah, so the Gibson-child did inherit a Sonnier feature. Who knew?
And still another's whose eyes are the color of plain, rich chocolate. No lemon pulp, no coffee grounds, nothing sticky sweet about them, no trace of anything. They are just deep, dark brown---with an almond shape to them.
True; there are few things lovelier than periwinkle wild flowers in springtime, blue summer skies, green shades of emerald, jade, and Irish hills, wintry grayish-blue lights, and blueberries fresh off the vine.
But for me these are a few of my favorite things:
- coffee
- lemon-flavored tea
- cinnamon
- puppy-dog eyes
- black-eyed Susans
- molasses
- chocolate with almonds
- Cajun brown eyes smiling at me
All my children but one have plain brown eyes. And only I see what lovely shades of brown beauty God can make.
Wow - what a fun post. I never thought about eyes so much. BTW - your children do all have gorgeous eyes!
