I was so cool and in control.
I packed the ballet fluff ahead of time and headed out the door to the Children's Museum for a back-to-school playdate with friends.
After an afternoon of riding bicycles with skeletons, holding and whistling with birds, playing karaoke, encasing oneself in a shimmering bubble, building dams and waterfalls at the water table, catching crabs and boiling them at Rowdy's Cowboy Cafe, putting tribal warpaint on our faces and swinging like monkeys through the Rain Forest (the children, of course...not me), and enjoying samples of vanilla, chocolate and strawberry cake in recognition of National Cake Day; we changed clothes in the car and booked it to the dance studio.
As we pulled into the parking lot of the dance studio, I wondered why it was so full and why so many parents were standing around.
After being out of the loop not having class for two weeks due to Veteran's Day and then Thanksgiving vacation, I had forgotten that yesterday was parents' visitation day. Looking like natives coming out of the jungle, we approached the doors of the studio. And I had forgotten to pack something after all...the mandatory ponytail holder.
I wasn't so cool or in control any more.
It's a good thing we're paying customers.
