Today we are reading The Big Tree written and illustrated by Bruce Hiscock. This book promises to unite science and art and agriculture and nature study and even history and family dynamics under a tree. It covers everything and the art work is artistically detailed and heartwarming. With new leaf buds blooming on the trees in our own backyard, I think we'll use this book as part of our springtime study.
Rebecca over at A Gypsy Caravan shares with us Joyce Kilmer's famous poem: Trees for our poetry read to go with our tree study.
Cay, this book looks amazing! I have never heard of it before ... perfect timing for us with our American history, and the trees getting ready to leaf out. Thanks for the tip!

Dawn,
At the very beginning of the book there is a timeline showing the tree beginning to sprut with Paul Revere racing by it on his horse in 1775 until the autumn of its life in 2000 with a space shuttle overhead.
I'm even passing it along to my 13 yr old ds to read.
It's a great find.
