This month our featured author will be Deborah Hopkinson. My children love her work and have been reading her for the past year. Make sure you and your children visit her website. It is caulked full of good material.
DQ (age 8) has turned the book Fannie in the Kitchen into a mini-kitchen bible of sorts. It inspired her to collect cookbooks by the droves and make all kinds of teatime yummies at home. Hopkinson's writing etiquette offers books for young and old, such as her classic Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt.
Book Fiesta is very low-key, suitable for busy families and relaxed families. It's purpose is to enjoy the library of children's authors with your children. It was originally entitled Slice of Pie because too many times we want to eat the whole pie, and can't possibly. We are left feeling overwhelmed and unsuccessful. The days and weeks fly by---we all know how quickly---and we don't feel we have done justice to a project. I recently felt this way at the end of the Olympics.
A Slice of Pie Book Study is just that...a slice! It is not intended that you and your children eat the whole pie. If you pick one book by this author, sit down, read, and delve through it with your child...then you have enjoyed that author's slice of pie. And isn't life just a little richer because of it? Your child has had a delightful slice of the pie and can always finish the pie on his own some other time.
You can sign up at Literature Alive! for discussion of author and material or you can simply sign up at Book Fiesta to receive the monthly notice, links, booklist, and biography. At some point this month, check with your library to obtain some of Deborah Hopkinson's book. Enjoy her books this month and indulge in the sweetness of sharing this pie with your children.
"A man should hear a little music,
read a little poetry,
and see a fine picture every day of his life,
in order that worldly cares may not obliterate
the sense of the beautiful which God
has implanted in the human soul."
~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ~
I have just joined Book Fiesta and Literature alive.
My son is not a strong reader. He has some comprehension problems. Can you recommend one of Deborah Hopkinson's books for him? I have just started homeschool this year and I am still finding my way. Thanks for the help.

Marcie,
I would look first at my son's interest. What is he passionate about? Does Hopkinson have a book that links into that interest? Please feel free to ask again at the Literature Alive! discussion board. You'll get lots of helpful feedback.
Remember, it only takes one book to spark a love for reading. : )
